The History of Love

I really had to push myself to get through this book! I know it just shows how dumb I really am..but I just kept getting so confused! I did finish it but I can't really say that I understand everything that happened!

  1. I'm tempted to re-read it before book group because I felt pretty confused through most of the book too. It took a while to wrap my head around the different narrators and tell who was who. I want to read it again when I can really appreciate it instead of trying to decipher it. The more I read the more I find that it got such rave reviews--which I just don't agree with. Maybe if I read it again...

  2. I'm with you Kim on that one..I have to return it to Orem Library today and tempted to not renew it to finish it.

  3. I'm pretty excited to discuss this one. I finished it a few days ago. I was a bit confused at first (I agree that keeping up with the narrators was tricky) but the more I've thought about it, the more I think I've figured stuff out and the better the book becomes. Hmmm...

  4. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one confused about the book. I am having a hard time making myself read it. Do I want to finish it--help me Amy, what are you figuring out and when will it get better?

  5. Hang in there, Shelley! I loved the book and think it's definately worth your while to keep reading. It's so very clever once it's not confusing.

  6. Whenever I encounter a difficult text like this, I try to use some strategies that help me organize the information or figure out what I need to know to understand it (schema). I think the organizers we created in group were helpful to most of us (Kim?).

Good readers know when they don't understand something and then find a strategy to help them understand.

I really liked the book, but it was difficult to keep track of all the relationships and the various incarnations of the novel HOL. I think work we did was worth the effort because this book had plenty to discuss.
